I only have visited the North eastern part of Australia. While I was there, I dove at Osprey Reef as well as the Great Barrier reef. I enjoyed the dives at Osprey and the area near Cod Hole (Ribbons) the most. We were lucky enough to dive and snorkel with Minke whales. An interesting dive at Oprey was North Horn with many many sharks. At night on Osprey I enjoyed seeing flashlight fish. The Cod at Cod Hole were very large, the largest one was maybe 6ft. long and four ft. high.
There are many areas of tourists interest in and around Cairns and Port Douglas.

Just spent the last year diving in Australia.  South West Rocks is fantastic-"Fish Rock Cave", Ningaloo Reef is also a spot where you will want to go.  Not as busy there as GBR.

Hello!

We live in Melbourne and have made a couple of dives around the country.. here's our favs:

1) Yongala Wreck / Townsville / Queensland
- not your typical wreck, this has crazy wildlife
- lots of schools, supersized everything - biggest bony fish in the water (Queensland Grouper)

2) Navy Pier / Exmouth / Western Australia
- military pier, lots of schools of everything
- great dive site for everything under the ocean
- must book in advance, dives depend on tides

3) Cod Hole & Coral Sea - Great Barrier Reef / Outer reefs
- need to do via liveaboard, min 3 days
- get to play and feed with potato cod.. haven't done but want to!

4) Other stuff @ Ningaloo / Western Australia
- great isolated beaches, snorkelling
- diving is great with whale sharks when in season (march - june)
- lots of manta rays in season as well

5) Rapid Bay Jetty & other sites in South Australia
- get to see leafy sea dragons, which are relatives to sea horses
- awesome vis in summer, but can get cold

Any questions around South Pacific, fire away Wink

I went diving with Mike Ball out to The Great Barrier Reef and Osprey Reef.  Was a great trip, and wish I had done the 7 day rather than 4 night Fly and Dive.

here's their website:  www.mikeball.com

A bit costly, but superb and really well worth the money.

There is also the HMAS Brisbane which is off the coast of Mooloolaba.

I would love to dive in Australia off the great barrier reef.  The one thing I am scared of is the great white sharks.  Is it true they are all over the coastline?

There are no sharks up north where the reef is, only more south by Sydney and south of there, or west side by Perth. I logged about 90 dives in Australia and never saw anything bigger then a reef shark. Sad
